The University of Georgia was founded in 1785 by Abraham Baldwin. It is located in Athens, Atlanta, Tifton, Griffin, and Lawrenceville. The main campus in Athens is on 759 acre campus. During the civil war the university closed for 3 years in 1863. After only admitting white males, in 1903 it admitted women, but they were not full time undergraduates until 1918. Currently UGA is ranked 20th overall in public schools.
