The woodland period lasted from 1,000 B.C. to 900 A.D. The early woodland period lasted from 1,000 B.C. to 300 B.C. Settlements were more permanent. They were pretty small which indicated that they were only occupied on a seasonal basis. the middle period lasted from 300 B.C. to 600 A.D. Settlement became larger and more permanent. Corn was introduced during this period but it was not an important dietary staple. These peoples made earthen rock mounds for religious, ceremonial, and burials The late Woodland period lasted from 600-900 A.D. This is the least understood period of the Woodland Indians. Some trends may have been reversed or intensified during this period. Earthen mounds were still created but less frequently.
